Debate and Controversy
Is Social Media that important that everyone needs to use it? Some people think that it is a vital key to Socializing, while others think that it is the worst thing to use for any type of socializing. It distracts us from the person that is right in front of us, and can even ruin friendships if one is not involved. On the other hand, it is the finest way of communicating with relatives, friends, Significant others, etc. in lighting speed. But is that still “Socializing”? “40% of 8 to 18 year olds spend 54 minutes a day on social media sites.” We are losing both our minds and the precious time we have in life. Not only time waster, but a friendship ender. “According to a Feb. 9, 2012 Pew Internet report, 15% of adult social network users had an experience on a social networking site that caused a friendship to end, 12% of adult users had an experience online that resulted in a face-to-face argument, and 3% of adults reported a physical confrontation as the result of an experience on a social networking site.” Is this really a kind of world that we want to bring up the next generation in. One that is dependent on Social Media and unfriendly people. We care more about being/talking with someone online, rather than be alone with our own thoughts. “There's always a friend around... online! Thanks to tricked-out apps on mobile devices, we never have to be truly alone. “Social media feeds this anxiety about being alone with our thoughts,” says Dr. Turkle, “and prevents us from learning to enjoy our own company.” Designate “no-device zones” like the dining room or car; even the Obamas leave their phones in a basket outside the kitchen.”
