Local Context
What is worse than using Social Media as a means of communication? That would be gangs of course. But on the better note, we can now use Social Media to better conduct a way for Chicago to fight Gangs. This is the better use, probably the second best use of using Social Media. Most gang members are said to use social media, so it is given that they will give away their location, and be able to be stopped. “Today, the Chicago Police Department is doing something similar with gangs. Using a tool academics call “network anal ysis,” the CPD is mapping the relationships among Chicago’s 14,000 most active gang members. It’s also ranking how likely those people are to be involved in a homicide, either as victims or offenders. In the process, the CPD has discovered something striking: Cities don’t so much have “wifi hot spots” as “hot people.”” While this does seem a bit far fetched and daring, it is worth it to catch those who are and might possibly kill someone. This issue is not necessarily and epidemic, but we still should be concerned with what these “Social” sites are doing to the current generation. They are target stores for gangs, and are being recruited through these so called “Social” sites. “Gangs use the sites to recruit younger members, coordinate violent crimes, and threaten other gangs.”
